About the Role:

The Life Sciences Intern role at Donaldson’s Material and Chemistry Group in Durham, NC, focuses on developing new purification processes for therapeutics. Interns will work alongside scientists and engineers on real-world projects that enhance purification technologies and bioprocessing efficiency.

Life science students- Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to design and execute experiments addressing purification challenges for various therapeutic modalities.
  • Perform bacterial and mammalian cell culture, including transformation/transfection for recombinant protein expression and plasmid DNA amplification.
  • Conduct molecular biology experiments, such as recombinant DNA construction, agarose gel electrophoresis, and gel extraction.
  • Perform protein purification using chromatography and filtration systems (including AKTA) and apply bioanalytical methods like SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, ELISA, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry.
  • Participate in data analysis, problem-solving, and laboratory maintenance while contributing to safety and quality initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications for Internship:

  • Current junior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or related life sciences field.
  • Laboratory experience and understanding of molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and bioanalytical techniques.
  • Familiarity with chromatography and filtration methods.
  • Strong teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AKTA chromatography systems.
  • Background in academic R&D labs.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical abilities.
