Educational Requirements for the Microbiologist Role:
Required:
- Bachelorโs degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology, or related science OR equivalent education/experience
- Physical eligibility to work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories
- Willingness to work overtime and travel for outbreak-related field work
Preferred:
- Bachelorโs degree in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field
- Experience in diagnostic microbiology laboratories
- Expertise in DNA isolation, PCR, and molecular assays
- Experience handling zoonotic agents
- Familiarity with COFL or similar LIMS systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Key Responsibilities of the Microbiologist:
- Extract DNA/RNA from various sample types
- Perform PCR, RT-PCR, and Real-Time PCR diagnostic assays
- Assist in development and validation of new diagnostic tests
- Enter and manage data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- Follow SOPs, maintain QA compliance, and meet documentation standards
- Support faculty and managers in the Molecular Diagnostics section
- Work safely within BSL-2 & BSL-3 laboratory environments
Skills Required for the Microbiologist Role:
- Strong molecular biology skills: DNA extraction, PCR, sample handling
- Understanding of biosafety, infectious diseases, and zoonotic pathogens
- Ability to work in BSL-2/3 settings
- Data recording, accuracy, and attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and during high-demand periods
- Experience with LIMS systems (preferred)
