Program Description
FNLCR is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. With over 2,000 employees, the lab pursues its public health service mission through translational and applied biomedical research that bridges academia, industry, and government science.
FNLCR fosters an interdisciplinary environment, encouraging collaborations across fields like pharmacology, cancer genomics, computational biology, preclinical imaging, and oncology.
The selected candidate (Leidos Biomedical Inc. hiring level: Scientist-2) will direct the Pharmacokinetics & Biopharmaceutics Research Laboratory at the NCI-Frederick campus. The lab supports drug discovery and development, translational drug mechanism studies, and clinical trial programs within the NCI Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD).
Success in this role requires expertise in pharmacology, ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Elimination), biopharmaceutics, and drug development (preferably oncology), with experience in bioanalytical methods and experimental approaches.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement R&D programs in pharmacokinetics and biopharmaceutics to support DCTDโs drug discovery and clinical research goals.
- Direct and validate bioanalytical methods to quantify drug levels and metabolites in biological specimens (blood, tissue, tumors).
- Characterize DMPK (Drug MetabolismโPharmacokinetics) of anti-cancer compounds across ADME parameters.
- Perform pharmacokinetic modeling and derive key parameters (e.g., CMAX, AUC, clearance, half-life).
- Advise development teams on dose regimens and scheduling.
- Conduct drug-drug interaction studies and assess metabolic stability.
- Lead laboratory staff, manage research priorities, budgets, and performance.
- Collaborate with NCI and extramural partners in drug development and discovery programs.
- Author or co-author peer-reviewed publications.
- Evaluate new technologies and propose their adoption.
Basic Qualifications
- PhD, or equivalent in Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Biomedical/Biological Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience (5 years preferred).
- Proven research interest in cancer pharmacokinetics and translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical applications.
- Postdoctoral or clinical fellowship experience in Pharmacokinetics, Clinical Pharmacology, Biopharmaceutics, or Drug Metabolism.
- Strong record of research, collaboration, and leadership.
- Demonstrated success in developing and validating bioanalytical methods for drug analysis.
- Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications for Scientist Job
- Experience measuring drug levels in tumor specimens or using ex vivo drug permeability/metabolism systems.
- Postdoctoral experience in oncology drug development.
- Proficiency with pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling tools, including PBPK and PopPK software.

Salary Range:
