Job Summary
The Core Facility Technologist II supports the GRCF Nucleic Acid Technologies and Services group by performing DNA/RNA isolation, Sanger sequencing, digital PCR, cell line authentication, and related sample processing and shipping tasks. This role requires adherence to lab and regulatory standards, exceptional customer service, and accurate execution of core facility operations.
The position interacts regularly with students, technicians, and principal investigators and includes troubleshooting customer samples, managing synthetic biology orders, and maintaining rigorous work quality.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Core Facility Operations

Prepare, qualify, monitor, and maintain core facility equipment; document parameters on log sheets.

Assemble, calibrate, clean, and perform minor repairs on lab equipment.

Conduct routine troubleshooting on complex instruments.

Perform competency assessments on specific procedures.

Ensure compliance with environmental health and safety regulations.
Sample & Inventory Management

Procure, process, and ship research specimens.

Monitor and update inventory databases for reagents, materials, and shipping supplies.

Assist with monthly quality assurance audits.
Customer & Administrative Support

Provide high-quality customer service and assist users with self-service equipment.

Interface with researchers to troubleshoot samples and experiments.

Track service activities and generate invoices ensuring accuracy and institutional compliance.

Process orders, maintain documentation, and perform clerical tasks.

Uphold QMS (Quality Management System) standards across facility operations.
Additional Responsibilities

Operate DNA sequencers, pyrosequencers, digital PCR instruments, and liquid handlers.

Participate in cross-training for blood processing, cell culture, and single-cell genomic methods.

Occasional Saturday work (1–2 hours) as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for Jobs at Johns Hopkins University

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, or a related field.

One year of laboratory or clinical research experience with relevant techniques.

Per JHU equivalency, additional experience may substitute for education, and vice versa.
Preferred Qualifications
