Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
OR - Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related life sciences with at least 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry
- Eligibility for Technologist in Cytogenetics CG(ASCP) certification upon hire
- CG(ASCP) certification required within 18 months of employment
- Completion of an accredited cytogenetics program or one year of clinical cytogenetics laboratory experience
Key Responsibilities for Cytogenetics Lab Scientist Role:
- Perform cytogenetics testing for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning
- Culture, harvest, and prepare slides from biological samples
- Analyze peripheral blood, amniotic fluid, tissue, bone marrow, and tumor samples
- Conduct chromosome analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)
- Perform microscopic and image analysis
- Support molecular assays including chromosome microarray analysis (CMA)
Skills Required for Cytogenetics Lab Scientist Role:
- Strong knowledge of cytogenetics laboratory techniques
- Experience with karyotyping, FISH, and molecular assays
- Attention to detail and analytical thinking
- Ability to work independently and as part of a clinical laboratory team
- Familiarity with chromosome microarray analysis (preferred)
