About the Program

The DIRECT Program (Diversifying Research and Experiential Learning in Cancer Training) at the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI) is a 12-month immersive experience funded by the Emerson Collective. It is designed for recent graduates passionate about advancing cancer research, health equity, and scientific innovation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree earned by June 2025.
  • Record of strong academic achievement (e.g., GPA, honors, or other distinctions).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in cancer research or biomedical sciences.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience with scientific writing or presentations.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a DIRECT Cancer Research Trainee, you will:

  • Conduct cancer research under a mentor and develop a mock research proposal (35%).
  • Participate in professional development, including networking, career planning, peer mentoring, and racial equity training (35%).
  • Build science communication skills by writing for peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences (30%).
