Are you passionate about advancing cancer diagnostics and digital health innovation? We are inviting applications for a Research Assistant to join a newly funded project through the Cancer Research Horizons Data Innovation Award.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the creation of the UK’s first and largest open-access multimodal dataset focused on oral, head, and neck precancers and cancers. You will join the vibrant NEOPATH Research Group, and work with Dr Hanya Mahmood and Professor Ali Khurram in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment at the forefront of translational oncology.
Main duties & Responsibilities:
- Curate, Organize, and Expand Dataset:
- Curate, organize, and expand a high-quality, multimodal research dataset that includes histopathological whole-slide images, clinical photographs, demographic data, clinical outcomes, and genomic profiles.
2. Collaboration and Integration:
- Collaborate with University teams to ensure all dataset activities comply with relevant legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements including those related to commercial readiness.
3. Project Support and Maintenance:
- Work closely with the Principal Investigator and co-investigator to support project planning, coordination, and delivery against defined milestones.
4. Quality Assurance and Reporting:
- Lead or contribute to data quality assurance tasks to ensure the dataset is AI-ready and suitable for open-access and/or commercial use.

Education and Requirements
- PhD, Master’s, or equivalent professional experience in a relevant area such as health sciences, biomedical data, digital pathology, clinical informatics, bioinformatics, or data-driven research – Essential
- Undergraduate degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant biological, biomedical, health, computing, or data science discipline – Essential
- Demonstrated experience or interest in the curation, management, and quality assurance of structured datasets – Essential
- Ability to manage, organize, and integrate multimodal datasets from multiple sources – Essential
- Understanding of data privacy, ethical handling of sensitive data, and/or familiarity with information governance or regulatory frameworks – Essential
- Strong communication skills, ability to present data and insights clearly – Essential
- Excellent time management and organizational skills – Essential
- Experience with tools used in digital pathology or bio-image analysis – Desirable
- Experience working with research ethics applications, data governance processes, or contributing to data commercialization projects – Desirable
