About the Role

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant to join the Advanced Resuscitation in Combat Casualty Care (ARC3) Laboratory. This position supports multidisciplinary research focused on trauma physiology and translational medicine.

The Research Assistant will perform laboratory procedures, manage data, and ensure compliance with UMB, IRB, and IACUC regulations while contributing to daily laboratory operations. The ideal candidate will apply scientific knowledge and analytical thinking to assist in both clinical and preclinical research studies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory maintenance and research activities, including ELISA assays, electrophoresis, DNA extractions, chromatography, and solution preparation.
  • Assist with advanced research techniques such as animal surgery, microscopy, imaging, recombinant DNA, protein purification, and hybridizations.
  • Perform data compilation and analysis using software such as LabChart, GraphPad Prism, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Office.
  • Conduct literature reviews, edit and prepare manuscripts, and create scientific illustrations for publication.
  • Train and guide students and laboratory technicians.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, and documentation in accordance with UMB standards and compliance protocols.
  • Perform administrative and other research-related duties as assigned.

Additional Essential Duties

  • Support sample preparation, point-of-care testing, and thromboelastograms (TEGs).
  • Ensure accurate documentation of study procedures, data files, and lab notebooks.
  • Participate in the design of research studies and contribute to data management and interpretation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, or a related field.
  • Experience: Not required.
  • Certification/Licensure: May require safety and compliance training related to occupational health and environmental standards.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Neurobiology, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, or related field.
  • At least one (1) year of clinical or research laboratory experience.
  • Experience in swine or hematology research, animal studies, or wet-lab techniques.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, IACUC, IRB, and research compliance practices.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office, GraphPad Prism, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Excellent attention to detail, teamwork, and communication abilities.
