Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a Research Specialist to focus on investigating pathogenic pathways and finding novel therapeutic targets for neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and related disorders. May make contributions to various aspects of research efforts. May include some routine trouble shooting, and independent decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree preferred, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Molecular and biochemical assays on cells and rodent and human tissues. Tasks will include protein, RNA and DNA extraction and purification, cell transfection, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, and molecular cloning.
  • Cell culture involving multiple cell types, including iPSCs.
  • Potential role in genome editing project involving generation of edited human iPSC lines.
    Assistance with routine lab operations, including ordering laboratory supplies, compliance with regulatory requirements, care and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and coordinating among laboratory research projects.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
  • Supervise and train students, provide technical advice and assistance to other laboratory members.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Sufficient eye-hand coordination for performing experiments using hand-held pipettes.
