Smartphone-powered COVID19 rapid test by Cellex and Gauss
Diagnostic maker Cellex announced plans to develop a SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus)Â infection test. One would be able to perform this test by themselves at home. The readings from the 15-minute test can be viewed on one’s personal smartphone. Callex previously received emergency authorization from FDA for a rapid COVID-19 antibody blood test in April.
To digitize the outcomes of the COVID-19 antigen test, Cellex has partnered with a developer company, Gauss.
The company is working currently to validate its diagnostics. The device previously showed a 10% rate of false-negative and no false-positive results, in the clinical trials.
Meanwhile, Gauss is working to make its smartphone app for the device to be user-friendly. The company is working on to provide a step-by-step instruction video on the procedures, from collecting a nasal swab sample to perform the test. After 15 minutes, results can be scanned using the camera of the smartphone. The scanned result confirms if it is positive or negative.
James Li, the founder, CEO, Callex, said that the AI-enabled COVID-19 antigen test makes it easy to self-monitor oneself and isolate when needed while being at home, thereby making a significant change in the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic in the states and beyond.
The app has an automatic function to report the results to local public health authorities. This would help to trace contacts of the virus-positive users while giving a mobile pass to the ones with negative results.
Siddarth Satish, founder, CEO, Gauss, said that the advanced computer vision algorithms embedded in the user-friendly device enabled the consumers to perform a rapid test in their homes just like a trained professional, simple with the help of their smartphones.
Cellex and Gauss said they plan to authorize their antigen test and the companion app by this fall.
