What is Vaccines Scientific Leaders Programme?

The Scientific Leaders Programme in Vaccines is a 2-year global programme which builds a pipeline of scientists with the right expertise, technical capabilities and behaviours to drive the future in Vaccines Research and Development.

How does the Vaccines Scientific leaders Programme work?

You will spend two years working on a key development project, contributing to key strategic areas of our Vaccines R&D business. We have three location options; Italy, Belgium or US which aligns to our Vaccine R&D hubs. Working on challenging projects will provide you with in-depth knowledge of the ways in which Science and Technology is being applied across R&D in GSK.

Is the Vaccines Scientific leaders Programme for you?

This is a scientific/technical leadership position where you will be empowered to be innovative, collaborative, decisive and bold to solve novel R&D problems. On completion of the 2-year programme, we aim to bring you on-board into available technical leadership roles that best suits business’ needs and your abilities.

We need Scientific leaders to help embed modern Scientific principles and ways of working within the vaccines R&D organisation. You will do this through:

Project Title: Integrate advanced computational protein design (Rosetta) and revolutionary structure determination (cryo-EM) for rapid antigen/antibody design and optimization.

Project proposal:

Aim of the project: Establish an advanced pipeline for rapid structure-based computational antigen and monoclonal antibody (mAb) design.

Expected outcomes:

GSK Scientific Leaders Programme

  • Validation of computational toolkits by solving antigen and antibody structures by cryo-EM.
  • Roll-out of user-friendly computational toolkits to global Vx RDC sites and GSK Pharma.
  • Generation of intellectual property and/or peer-reviewed external publications on novel antigens and mAbs.
  • Present research findings to the scientific community.

Strategic fit and link to Vaccine Strategy:

GSK Scientific Leaders Programme

  • Develop innovative potential and competitive advantage in the field of antigen and antibody design.
  • Builds on a major existing collaboration with Johns Hopkins University (JHU, Baltimore, Maryland) (proof-of-concept project ongoing now).
  • Fully deploys new $2.5M in-house state-of-the-art cryo-EM facility.
  • Synergistic with work ongoing in cryo-EM and biocomputational teams in GSK Pharma (US and UK).
  • Impact on Vaccine or Technology platforms: Accelerated projects, an early design of antigens and antibodies with desirable features.

To be successful in this role you should have:

GSK Scientific Leaders Programme

  • PhD in Protein Biochemistry, Computational, or Structural Biology.
  • Background in cryo-EM and computational methods for protein engineering.
  • Experience with antibody modelling and antigen design, (strongly preferred)
  • Knowledge of experimental methods for measuring binding of antigen: antibody complexes (SPR, BLI) (preferred).
  • Experience or knowledge of X-ray crystallography (preferred).
  • Knowledge of vaccinology, virology, immunology (preferred).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • GSK Scientific Leaders Programme The ability to deal with complexity, and strong problem-solving and self-directional abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills & ability to explain complicated subjects to non-expert audiences.
  • Excellent and proven teamwork attitude and spirit.
  • The program will include exciting and impactful projects for each candidate, with an emphasis of developing the deep technical expertise within Vaccine Design & Characterization, Preclinical R&D and (depending on the candidate’s skillset) with partner organisations, with whom we will collaborate to deliver these initiatives.
