Research Assistant Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This fixed-term, recurring part-time role supports funded research activities and reports directly to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Assistant provides analytical and operational support to the Principal Investigator and research team, including coordination of established protocols and overlapping projects. The role requires strict adherence to University of Calgary ethics guidelines and internal protocols to ensure research objectives are met.

Recurring part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

  • Provide potential participants and stakeholders with information regarding research programs and services
  • Develop, determine, and display recruitment materials, including posters and emails, across various locations
  • Assist in the coordination of projects and grants with investigators and researchers
  • Communicate with participating facilities regarding study activities
  • Recruit patients on-site in collaboration with local facility staff
  • Develop informed consent forms, source documents, worksheets, and case report forms
  • Contribute to protocol development, including patient recruitment strategies, study design, methodology, and retention planning
  • Communicate and build rapport with research team members, sponsors, collaborators, and stakeholders
  • Prepare ethics applications and study modifications for submission to ethics boards
  • Obtain informed consent from participants or surrogate decision-makers and administer questionnaires in accordance with approved protocols
  • Coordinate and schedule research visits and calls per study procedures
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for interested participants in specific studies
  • Record study data, conduct chart reviews, and maintain data logs
  • Collaborate with study investigators to complete study activities, including obtaining signatures and reviewing abnormal test results
  • Perform physician-delegated functions such as patient interviews, education, questionnaire administration, and basic physical measurements (e.g., height, weight, blood pressure)

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, or a related field
  • 1–3 years of related health research experience
  • Combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., SAS, STATA, EndNote)
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet-based tools
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and multitask effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Strong professional report-writing abilities
  • Ability to problem-solve in moderately complex situations
  • Demonstrated strong communication, teamwork, and customer service skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment within established guidelines
  • Openness to learning, professional development, and new challenges
