Bioinformatics Job Overview
Oxford Nanopore Technologies is seeking a Field Applications Scientist (Bioinformatics) to partner closely with Sales teams and customers. This field-based role provides pre- and post-sales technical expertise across sequencing platforms and software, supporting customers in experimental design, data analysis, and workflow optimisation while building strong, long-term technical relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Customer & Sales Support
- Partner with Sales teams to deliver pre- and post-sales technical support across Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms and software.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor, guiding customers on best practices and successful adoption of solutions.
- Provide technical consultations throughout the customer journey, including experimental design, workflow optimisation, and data analysis.
Training & Engagement
- Deliver technical presentations, training sessions, and on-site support at customer sites, key accounts, and scientific meetings.
- Collaborate with the regional Technical Trainer and internal teams to deliver structured technical training programmes.
Relationship & Market Development
- Build and maintain strong technical relationships to ensure effective implementation and optimal scientific outcomes.
- Provide technical support to Channel Partners to drive customer success and business growth.
- Monitor competitive technologies and market trends, sharing insights with commercial and product teams.
Reporting & Collaboration
- Accurately document customer interactions, technical enquiries, and follow-up actions in the CRM system.
- Provide back-up coverage to adjacent territories as required.
Education Required for Bioinformatics Jobs
- MS or PhD in Life Sciences, Bioinformatics, or equivalent experience in a customer-facing scientific role.
Experience
- Prior experience in a Field Applications Scientist, technical support, or customer-facing scientific role.
- Hands-on experience with experimental design and genomic data analysis (e.g. whole-genome or transcriptome sequencing).
- Experience with long-read sequencing technologies is desirable.
- Experience supporting customers in pre- and post-sales environments is an advantage.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong foundation in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or related disciplines.
- Practical experience with NGS data analysis workflows (e.g. genome assembly, variant calling, structural variant analysis, transcriptomics).
- Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages (e.g. Python, R, Perl).
- Comfortable working in UNIX/Linux environments; experience with high-performance computing and cloud platforms (e.g. AWS) is desirable.
- Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and customer-focused mindset.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.

- Field-based role with frequent local customer visits and occasional overnight travel (up to ~40%).
