About the Department
The Alfred Pathology Service (APS) provides comprehensive pathology testing, consultation, and specimen collection services.
The Microbiology Unit delivers diagnostic services across a broad range of infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on:
- Trauma and emergency services
- Organ transplantation (heart and lung)
- HIV diagnostics
- Bone marrow transplantation
APS is partnering with Monash Health to develop Victoria’s premier shared public pathology service, offering staff the opportunity to contribute to shaping this evolving collaboration.
Role Overview
Alfred Health’s Microbiology Department is seeking a qualified Medical Laboratory Scientist for a temporary part-time position. Based at The Alfred Hospital, the successful candidate will perform diagnostic microbiology testing in accordance with documented laboratory protocols and within defined turnaround times.
Roster & Shifts for Microbiology Jobs
- Shifts every Thursday and Friday
- One weekend shift per fortnight
- Rotational roster including day, evening, and overnight shifts
Key Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic microbiology testing following established laboratory protocols
- Conduct specimen set-up, culture reading, and result interpretation
- Ensure work is completed within acceptable turnaround times
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, quality, and compliance
- Communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary laboratory team
Skills & Qualifications
- BS or BAppSc with a major in Microbiology
- Eligibility for professional scientist membership with:
- Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS), or
- Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM)
- Experience in diagnostic microbiology testing
- Strong attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
