Life Science Job Role Overview
The Entry Level Scientist (Scientist I) position is based onsite at a GMP laboratory in Middleton, Wisconsin. The role involves performing high-quality sample testing for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical clients, supporting the advancement of therapies to market. This position contributes directly to PPD’s mission of improving patient health through rigorous laboratory science.

The Scientist I uses innovative technologies to conduct sample preparation and analysis in support of pharmaceutical stability and analytical testing. The role plays an integral part in generating accurate and reliable data that supports clinical and regulatory decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct complex laboratory analyses under general supervision
- Perform routine sample preparation and analytical procedures to quantitatively measure pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical compounds in various formulations and biological matrices
- Train on the operation, maintenance, and theoretical principles of analytical instrumentation
- Follow SOPs and applicable regulatory guidelines
- Review and compile analytical results, comparing data against SOP acceptance criteria, methodologies, protocols, and product specifications
Education Requirements for Life Science Job
Bachelor’s degree (Life Sciences preferred) or equivalent formal academic or vocational qualification
Experience Requirements
- Prior experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the role
- Comparable to 0–2 years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of analytical instrumentation operation, maintenance, and theory
- Familiarity with SOPs, regulatory guidelines, compendia, and ICH requirements
- Strong manual dexterity
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Effective time and project management abilities
- Proven problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to cross-train on sample preparation techniques across laboratory groups
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment or independently with supervision
- Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) safety standards
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, lab coats, gowning, and ear protection
- Ability to stand or remain stationary for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds
- Ability to work in non-traditional laboratory environments
- Potential exposure to hazardous materials, including infectious agents
- Ability to perform effectively under pressure while managing multiple tasks
