Bioinformatician Overview

The Bioinformatician position supports translational cancer research within the German Cancer Consortium coordinated by German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). The role is physically located at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Berlin while employment is administered by DKFZ in Heidelberg.

The position contributes to research on liquid biopsy technologies and molecular diagnostics for precision oncology. Work is conducted in collaboration with partners including the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC).

Research Focus

  • Development of patient-centric molecular diagnostic tools using nucleic-acid–based technologies.
  • Application of short-read and long-read sequencing technologies combined with AI-powered analytical tools.
  • Investigation of genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic biomarkers for cancer detection and monitoring.

Current research projects focus on:

  • Brain tumors
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Hematolymphoid malignancies

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and adapt bioinformatics methods for analysis of human genomic and epigenomic datasets.
  • Design and implement analysis workflows for:
    • Long-read whole-genome sequencing
    • Targeted short-read sequencing (e.g., hybridization capture and MeDIP-seq).
  • Maintain and expand in-house software tools and AI-based models for cancer classification.
  • Analyze experimental data and present results to research teams and collaborators.
  • Collaborate with internal researchers and international partners in multidisciplinary research projects.

Candidate Profile for Bioinformatician Role

  • MS and Ph.D. in a relevant field such as:
  • Demonstrated experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis.
  • Strong programming skills in R/Bioconductor and Python.
  • Experience with version control systems (Git) and workflow management tools such as:
    • Snakemake
    • CWL
    • Nextflow
  • Practical experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence, including frameworks like PyTorch and MLops workflows.
  • Strong analytical and biostatistical capabilities.
  • Ability to quickly understand complex scientific concepts and work independently.
  • Capability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluent written and spoken English is required.
