About the Role

De Montfort University is seeking an experienced Research Fellow in Textile Biotechnology to join the Textile Engineering and Materials (TEAM) Research Group within the School of Design Innovation. TEAM focuses on developing innovative and environmentally friendly textile technologies to support sustainable and circular textile systems.

This role is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and will focus on developing biotechnology-based methods to recover valuable fibres and dyes from waste wool and wool-blended textiles for recycling and reuse.

Key Responsibilities at De Montfort University UK

  • Develop and scale a pilot-level enzymatic process for recovering fibres and dyes from waste wool-based textiles
  • Support the remanufacturing and reuse of recovered materials to advance textile circularity
  • Apply knowledge of textile materials, wet-processing, and chemical engineering
  • Conduct analysis, evaluation, and reporting of research outcomes
  • Contribute to collaborative research activities and shared project tasks
  • Produce high-quality technical reports and presentations

Essential Criteria

  • Postgraduate-level research experience in Biological Sciences, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of textile materials and wet-processing techniques
  • Experience with chemical engineering principles and analytical methods
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team

Desirable Criteria

  • PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Knowledge of enzymes and enzymatic catalysis
  • Experience with pilot-scale or applied research systems
