Product Developer – Beverage Position Overview

The Product Developer – Beverage supports the success of Starbucks by planning, developing, and executing multiple beverage innovation projects across the EMEA region. Working as an individual contributor, the role collaborates with cross-functional teams within Starbucks EMEA, global teams, and other regional groups.

The position may require occasional travel to suppliers and manufacturers, primarily within the United Kingdom and Europe.

Key Responsibilities

Innovation

  • Proactively gather, analyze, and maintain product and technology trend information.
  • Support idea-generation sessions to initiate the creation of new beverage concepts and products.
  • Contribute to white-space development aligned with the EMEA beverage strategy.

Product Development

  • Design and conduct tabletop experiments and tests including:
    • Product prototypes
    • Initial product yields
    • Product bills of materials (BOM) and recipe cards
  • Conduct in-market testing to develop operational procedures in collaboration with Central Operations.

Workload Planning

  • Assess product and project briefs to develop appropriate R&D responses aligned with the company’s new product development (NPD) and product life-cycle processes.
  • Develop and communicate work plans with cross-functional teams.
  • Manage recipe development work related to ad hoc sales initiatives or market-specific product development and reformulation.

Supplier Management

  • Develop and communicate NPD supplier briefs.
  • Coordinate requests for samples, provisional specifications, sample tracking, and feedback within established timelines.
  • Maintain accurate sample logs and records.

Communication

  • Establish, document, and present key project information to business leaders to support progress toward commercialization and implementation.
  • Manage the flow of project information and provide updates to cross-functional teams, management, and senior leadership when required.

Project Support

  • Lead the start-up and implementation of new product development initiatives.
  • Prepare project summaries and reports.
  • Provide input into the development of training materials in collaboration with operations teams.
  • Transition projects to supply chain operations and supplier quality assurance teams for full-scale launch.
  • Support ongoing technical improvements up to and including product launch.

Documentation

  • Maintain up-to-date product builds, bills of materials (BOMs), and documentation related to product development projects.
  • Ensure proper documentation of intellectual property and technical information associated with new product initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience Required

Education

  • Degree in Food Science or a related discipline preferred, or equivalent relevant industry experience.

Experience

  • Experience in food or beverage retail or manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in product development, innovation, and/or menu development.
  • Knowledge of process development and product specification development.
