Bioinformatics Job Overview

The Bioinformatics Analyst provides assistance to faculty and research staff in the collection, management, analysis, and interpretation of biological data, with a focus on genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, or microarray studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret complex biological information.
  • Reduce and consolidate output from software tools.
  • Prepare data for utilization by other scientists.
  • Monitor new data from public databases, identify missing data, and clean data to meet quality control standards.
  • Query various sources (Web, publications, internal DFCI resources) for necessary information.
  • Direct and guide DNA, RNA, and protein sequence database searches and computational analyses.
  • Implement end-users’ needs in database searching and integration.
  • Maintain computational infrastructure and manage the flow of samples and information for large-scale studies.
  • Identify and resolve problems with the data management process whenever possible.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Familiarity with programming languages (Perl/Python, Java, C/C++), statistical programming (R or related tools), web development, and database queries (SQL).
  • Understanding of principles of experimental design and modern data analysis paradigms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels and external contacts.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.

Minimum Qualifications for a Bioinformatics Job

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MS preferred or PhD in bioinformatics, or life sciences.
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to perform primary duties under close to moderate supervision.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Typically, this position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
  • Level III may provide workflow direction to subordinates and mentor junior staff.
