Position Overview
A Bioscience Officer serves as a member of the military and is responsible for preventing and reducing health threats to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members while improving their operational performance. The role focuses on developing procedures, standards, equipment, and strategies that protect personnel and resources, respect the environment, and enhance effectiveness.
Role Summary
Bioscience Officers are specialists in the human dimension of military operations, environmental processes, and occupational health and safety. They also possess expertise in the roles, capabilities, and needs of CAF members. Their primary objective is to optimize human interaction with military systems by interpreting and applying current scientific standards and practices.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Applied Research and Development
Responsibilities include:
- Studying human responses to environmental stress.
- Developing, testing, and evaluating protective clothing and equipment.
- Analyzing human-machine interfaces and system design.
- Conducting human-factors analysis of accidents.
- Utilizing technology to improve health, safety, and human capability.
- Providing occupational hygiene support, including health hazard and risk assessments of CAF workplaces and equipment.
High-Risk Training for CAF Members
Responsibilities include:
- Delivering threat-specific countermeasures.
- Training in the use of protective equipment.
- Providing operational medical training to ensure safe and effective performance under environmental, occupational, and operational health threats.
Work Environment
Bioscience Officers typically work in Canadian Forces Health Services Headquarters, CAF research establishments, or training units. They may be assigned to a Health Hazard Assessment Team or the Canadian Forces School of Survival and Aeromedical Training.
They may also be deployed to support operations of the Army, Royal Canadian Navy, or Royal Canadian Air Force, both within Canada and internationally.
For Regular Force members, assignment to a first base occurs after completion of required training. While some flexibility exists in postings, relocation is likely during the course of a career.
For Primary Reserve Force members, service is conducted through a specific Reserve unit on a part-time basis. Outside of training, work typically involves one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment. Relocation is not required for Reserve members.

Direct Entry Options
The minimum required education is a four-year honors bachelor’s degree from an accredited Canadian university in one of the following fields:

The CAF determines whether an applicant’s academic program meets the training criteria and may place candidates directly into on-the-job training following completion of Basic Military Officer Qualification (BMOQ). Both BMOQ and military occupation training are required prior to assignment.
Preference is given to candidates holding a Master’s degree in Human Systems Integration (Human Factors) or Occupational Health (Industrial Hygiene).
