The Genome Biology Unit
The Genome Biology Unit, led by Eileen Furlong, Head of the Department/Unit, hosts nine interdisciplinary research groups focused on understanding how genetic information is regulated and expressed to generate diverse biological systems and phenotypes. The Unit is deeply involved in national and international collaborative initiatives and applies genome-wide approaches to model complex biological processes from genotype to phenotype.
Role Overview
The Scientific Writing, Communications and Project Officer supports the Head of the Genome Biology Unit in scientific, organizational, and strategic activities. The role combines scientific writing, project coordination, communication, and grant-related responsibilities, serving as a central interface between researchers, administration, and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific Writing & Organisation
- Track, collate, and prepare periodic reports covering departmental activities, publications, awards, and networks
- Prepare scientific programs for meetings and retreats in coordination with the Unit Administrator
- Support staff recruitment processes, including applicant screening and interview scheduling
- Act as a liaison between researchers and EMBL HR and administrative teams to ensure smooth workflows (experience with Workday is advantageous)
- Identify funding opportunities and support the preparation and submission of grant applications
- Manage existing grants in collaboration with internal (EMBL grants and finance teams) and external partners, including preparation and submission of periodic grant reports
Communication
- Co-create scientifically accurate and engaging press releases, news features, and website content in collaboration with EMBL’s communications team
- Prepare high-level scientific presentation materials (PowerPoint/Keynote) for conferences, corporate events, and public engagement activities
- Develop scientific illustrations for presentations and publications (e.g., BioRender)
- Enhance the Unit’s public outreach and visibility through social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Bluesky)
- Contribute to grants, webpages, and press releases
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Ph.D. in Life Sciences with postdoctoral research experience in genomics or related areas (e.g., single-cell genomics, gene regulation, genetic variation)
- Proven ability to tailor scientific content for diverse audiences, including specialists, collaborators, funders, and the general public
- Demonstrated experience producing clear, accurate, and persuasive scientific writing through publications, grant applications, and scientific or financial reports
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to synthesize research activities across multiple laboratories into coherent narratives and reports
- Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative, empathetic working style
- Ability to multitask, manage shifting priorities, and work in a goal-oriented environment
- High level of organization, attention to detail, and deadline awareness
- Willingness to learn new skills and continuously self-improve
Additional Skills (Desirable)
- Training or experience in science communication (written and/or oral)
- Training or experience in scientific project management
- Knowledge of German (advantageous but not required)
Salary & Benefits
Salary Grade: 4 or 5
Minimum Starting Salary: €3,704.83 per month (after tax and before 13% deduction to EMBL social security system)
