Microbiologist Job Overview
Johnson & Johnson is seeking an Advanced Therapy Process Microbiologist to support CAR-T and Lentiviral Vector manufacturing at our Raritan, NJ site. This role sits within the Quality Assurance workstream and partners closely with Operations and Quality Control. You will develop expertise in advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) manufacturing and contribute directly to improving patient outcomes.
CAR-T therapy is a breakthrough immunotherapy involving genetic modification of a patient’s own T-cells to target and eliminate cancer cells. Through a global collaboration with Legend Biotech, J&J is advancing ciltacabtagene autoleucel (cilta-cel) for multiple myeloma.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify contamination, cross-contamination, and process-related risks; drive mitigation strategies with QA, QC, operations, and manufacturing teams
- Develop, track, and maintain accurate metrics and reports locally and across global ATMP sites
- Review and approve non-conformance investigations within subject matter area
- Manage, assess, and implement change controls
- Evaluate and introduce emerging digital/technical solutions in Quality
- Serve as subject matter expert in aseptic processing for Lentiviral Vector manufacturing
- Train personnel on aseptic techniques and standards
- Ensure compliance with regulatory expectations, safety and environmental legislation, and cGMP requirements
- Represent the function during regulatory inspections
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; preferred majors include Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related Biological Sciences
Required Experience & Skills
- 2–4 years’ experience in a GMP-regulated environment
- Strong understanding of aseptic manufacturing and aseptic controls
- Practical, applied microbiology expertise
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Experience & Skills
- Data analysis, basic statistics, and data visualization proficiency
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Minitab, Tableau, or similar tools
- Strong decision-making ability and Quality-focused mindset
- Ability to collaborate and influence across all organizational levels
- Demonstrated resilience and problem-solving ability
Other Requirements
- Up to 10% travel
- On-site schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
