Scientific Project Officer Role Overview

The Scientific Project Officer position offers an opportunity to join a collaborative Training Team at EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, UK. The role is part of a fixed-term project and involves working closely with, and receiving support from, the Scientific Training Lead (Grants Programme).

This role provides the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of high-quality scientific training and knowledge exchange programmes that support the global research community. The position also allows the development of coordination, project management, and training delivery skills within a dynamic and purpose-driven environment.

Training is a core activity at EMBL-EBI and involves nearly every department within the organization. The Training Team, consisting of approximately 20 members, delivers internationally recognized training programmes that include face-to-face and online courses, train-the-trainer initiatives, and secondee programmes. The team also contributes to many externally funded projects that may involve training delivery, dissemination, and project management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training Programme Development and Delivery

    • Support the design and delivery of global training programmes, including webinars, on-demand learning content, remote courses, and face-to-face training sessions.
    • Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure training programmes meet audience needs through needs analysis and competency frameworks.
  • Project Coordination

    • Represent the training team in internal and external project meetings.
    • Contribute to planning, coordination, and delivery activities.
    • Facilitate meetings, record minutes, track KPIs, and prepare reports and presentations.
  • Training Content Development

    • Develop and facilitate high-quality training materials and courses.
    • Promote best practices in training and support project objectives.
  • Quality Assurance and Evaluation

    • Monitor and analyze course feedback to support quality assurance.
    • Assess the long-term impact of training activities.
  • Communication and Dissemination

    • Maintain training communications and information, including web content.
    • Support dissemination of project updates.
  • Funding and Grants

    • Contribute to funding applications and grant writing for new training initiatives.
    • Work with the Scientific Training Lead to maintain a strong portfolio of externally funded training projects aligned with EMBL strategic goals.
  • Additional Responsibilities

    • Contribute to EMBL-EBI’s core training programme, including live courses and on-demand learning resources.
    • Participate in community initiatives such as developing training standards and delivering train-the-trainer activities.

The position reports to the Scientific Training Leads and requires significant independence as well as frequent interaction with colleagues and external stakeholders. The role may involve occasional international travel and occasional work outside normal office hours.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Education

    • PhD or equivalent level of expertise in Molecular Life Sciences or a related discipline.
  • Experience

    • Experience managing or contributing to projects in an international environment and/or European or publicly funded projects.
    • Experience delivering teaching or training and/or designing training programmes for specific audiences.
  • Professional Skills

    • Ability to work to deadlines and effectively manage time, workload, and organizational responsibilities.
    • Experience using remote collaboration tools and digital project management platforms such as Zoom, Slack, Trello, or similar software.
    • Self-motivated with the ability to engage and inspire others.
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with diverse audiences.
    • Capability to lead activities of varying complexity when required.
    • Ability to foster a culture of integrity and trust among collaborators while setting realistic expectations.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Teaching or training qualification.
    • Experience in outreach and communications, including web content creation, social media, mailing lists, and newsletters.
    • Knowledge of Agile working methodologies.
    • Experience with bioinformatics tools and resources.
    • Experience in programming or bioinformatics analysis.
    • Experience in stakeholder analysis, training needs assessment, or competency framework development.
    • Strong facilitation and negotiation skills.

Contract Details

  • Contract Length: Fixed-term, project-based contract ending 31 December 2027.
  • Salary: Grade 5 with a monthly salary starting at £3,229.13 after tax, excluding pension and insurance contributions.
