Position Summary
The Clinical Bioinformatics Scientist II is responsible for reviewing, validating, and troubleshooting genetic variants identified through Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) workflows. The role includes investigating quality control anomalies, resolving discrepancies between assays, and supporting production workflows. Ensuring data accuracy and clinical validity is central to all responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and assess the veracity of clinically reportable genetic variants, including SNVs and CNVs, identified in NGS or WGS data and flagged for manual review
- Review results from confirmatory assays that corroborate or contradict primary assay findings and make final determinations when discrepancies occur
- Troubleshoot quality control anomalies generated by automated pipelines at the sample or batch level
- Triage stalled samples, variants, and clinical reports
- Monitor data quality metrics and investigate root causes of quality control failures
- Support production duties, including cross-team requests, on-call coverage, and program development initiatives
- Collaborate cross-functionally with bioinformatics, automation, engineering, clinical genomics, laboratory scientists, laboratory directors, and research teams
Minimum Qualifications for Remote Bioinformatics Jobs
- Bachelor’s degree in a biological field (e.g., biology, microbiology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, biochemistry) with four years of relevant professional experience OR
- Master’s degree in a biological field with two years of relevant professional experience
- Strong foundational knowledge of genetics
- Experience analyzing NGS data in an academic or industry environment
- Familiarity with IGV or other genome browsers
- Knowledge of NGS alignment, variant calling, and visualization tools
Technical Familiarity (One or More of the Following)
- Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
- Programming or scripting languages such as Python, R, or SQL
- Version control systems including git or GitHub
- Project management tools such as Jira, Asana, or Monday
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity or hands-on experience with NGS wet lab protocols, preferably in a production environment
- Academic-level wet lab knowledge may be sufficient
Additional Job Standards
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work at a computer and view screens for extended periods
Compensation
- Pay Range: $90,000 – $110,000 annually (USD)
- Compensation is based on skills, experience, education, certifications, internal equity, and market data
