About the Research Assistant Position
The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) is seeking a Research Assistant (RA) to join Dr. Tawfeek’s laboratory at the Long Island Campus. The Research Assistant will support investigator-initiated research programs focused on bone loss and immune dysfunction following spinal cord injury (SCI) using preclinical rodent models.
The role involves conducting in vivo and in vitro experiments, molecular biology assays, and laboratory support activities. The successful candidate will work under close supervision from Dr. Tawfeek and members of the research team.
Responsibilities
- Perform in vivo and in vitro procedures, experiments, and assays
- Assist with sample processing, storage, inventory management, and coordination of specimen transport and shipping in accordance with IATA guidelines
- Maintain laboratory equipment and organize detailed laboratory and study documentation
- Assist with compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations, including animal care and biosafety protocols
- Order reagents and animals from approved vendors
- Perform additional related duties as assigned
Qualifications For Research Assistant Job
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Biology, or a related field (minimum requirement)
- Hands-on experience working with mice, including:
- Colony maintenance, breeding, and genotyping
- Injections, surgical procedures, and postoperative monitoring
- Blood collection, cardiac puncture, euthanasia, and tissue collection
- Experience with tissue culture, PCR, Western blotting, and ELISA
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Motivated, reliable team player with effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing contusion and/or transection spinal cord injury surgery in mice
- Background in bone biology and/or immunology
- Experience with cell and tissue staining techniques
- Experience with flow cytometry analysis
