The Opportunity:
As a Fruit & Vegetable Agronomist, you’ll be the key technical bridge between growers, supply partners, and Woolworths’ internal teams. Based at the Melbourne Fresh Distribution Centre, you’ll lead upstream agronomic improvements to ensure consistent quality, safety, and volume availability across the fresh produce portfolio. This is a highly collaborative, cross-functional role working closely with Technical, Buying, Operations, and Product Development teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- In this Agronomist role, you have to develop and execute quality and availability strategies across fresh produce categories
- Act as the on-farm technical expert for pre-harvest agronomy and post-harvest management
- Ensure all inbound produce meets food safety, legality, and Woolworths brand specifications in the Food Science Jobs at Woolworths Group.
- Apply and monitor food safety and regulatory compliance systems
- Manage supplier sampling, testing, and evaluation to guarantee shelf freshness and functionality
- Drive continuous improvement across the grower and supplier base
- Partner with Buying, Product Development, Technical, and Operations teams
- Translate agronomic insights into commercially aligned outcomes
Qualifications & Experience for the Agronomist role:
- Essential / Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Horticulture, Agronomy, or Food Science (preferred)
- Experience & Knowledge
- Hands-on experience in fruit and vegetable production or post-harvest packing environments
- Strong practical knowledge of major fruit and vegetable crops and production methods
- Understanding of Australian and New Zealand agricultural and food regulatory frameworks
- Experience applying food safety, quality assurance, and compliance protocols
- Genuine passion for fresh food and produce quality
