Educational Requirements for the Accessioning Technician Role:
- High School Diploma or GED (required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, or a related scientific field (preferred)
- Relevant laboratory experience strongly preferred
Key Responsibilities of the Accessioning Technician:
- Receive and open delivered laboratory specimens, verifying sample identity and testing requirements
- Accession samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with accurate demographic and test data
- Maintain a strict chain of custody and specimen traceability using barcoding systems
- Aliquot specimens for initial, repeat, confirmatory, or additional testing
- Route samples to the appropriate laboratory sections in a timely manner
- Store specimens according to defined storage and retention requirements
- Verify specimens for discard per established procedures
- Communicate low inventory levels to Shipping, Receiving, and QC departments
- Adhere to all laboratory safety, quality, and compliance standards
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and data collection activities
- Maintain a clean, organized, and inspection-ready workspace
- Communicate professionally with coworkers, clients, vendors, and visitors
- Support team objectives and provide leadership through example
Skills Required for the Accessioning Technician Role:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Familiarity with LIMS or laboratory data systems (preferred)
- Understanding of the chain of custody and specimen handling protocols
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced laboratory environment
- Basic laboratory aliquoting and sample handling skills
