Scientist Job Role Overview
PerkinElmer OneSource Scientific Services is seeking a highly motivated Assay Scientist to join the Technical Lab Services (TLS) division, embedded within a customer research unit at the GSK Stevenage campus.
This role supports biology and life sciences R&D activities, contributing to the development of innovative biotherapeutic medicines. You will work within a collaborative scientific environment across a diverse biotherapeutic portfolio while developing your career within PerkinElmer’s scientific organization.
The position reports to a dedicated PerkinElmer Team Leader and operates directly at the customer site.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory & Assay Execution
- Perform routine laboratory research activities including:
- Cell culture
- Sample preparation
- Assay reagent and media preparation
- Execute a variety of biological assays using both manual and automated techniques
- Apply approved protocols, SOPs, and quality standards during all experimental work
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Analyze and report assay data using corporate tools
- Apply QC rules to assess data acceptability
- Track assay performance metrics and identify trends or issues
- Suggest improvements to assay methodologies and support evaluation of new technologies
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Actively contribute to scientific team meetings through data presentations and innovation discussions
- Share best practices across teams and support service development initiatives
- Work independently and flexibly to meet project timelines and priorities
Compliance & Quality
- Maintain compliance with health & safety, security, environmental, and operational requirements
- Operate strictly to approved quality standards
- Maintain required training certifications

Qualifications & Experience for Assay Scientist
Education
- BSc (or equivalent) in:
- Biology
- Biotechnology
- Biomedical Sciences
- Related scientific discipline
Experience
- 1–2 years of laboratory experience following SOPs and defined protocols
- Hands-on experience in:
- Cell culture
- Biological assays (manual and automated)
- Demonstrated experience with:
- Organoid cell cultures
- Flow cytometry
- Cellular imaging
- Meso Scale Discovery (MSD) platforms
- Knowledge of:
- Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
- Laboratory safety practices
- GCP, GCLP, and GMP principles (pharmaceutical environment)
- Experience training staff in laboratory techniques (preferred)
- Computational skills for automated data acquisition and analysis (preferred)
- Familiarity with 5S and/or Six Sigma principles (a plus)
Working Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work in laboratory and controlled environments requiring PPE (lab coat, safety glasses)
- Handling of biohazards following bloodborne pathogen surveillance
- Hepatitis B vaccination may be required (vaccination program available)
- Ability to:
- Remain stationary >25% of the time
- Move between labs and buildings onsite
- Occasionally travel to other customer sites
- Lift up to 25 lbs (occasionally up to 50 lbs)
- Exposure to laboratory hazards including biological materials, chemicals, and temperature extremes
- May be required to manage hazardous waste in compliance with regulations
- May require medical clearance, respirator training, and fit testing
