Research Scientist Role Summary

The Research Scientist will contribute to advancing smarter and healthier field crops through innovative and integrated disease management approaches. The role involves working across field, glasshouse, and laboratory environments to deliver industry-funded research projects focused on improving crop health and production.

The individual will design and conduct experiments, analyse data, and communicate findings to both scientific and industry audiences. As part of a collaborative national network of pathologists, breeders, and agronomists, the role offers varied work, strong team support, and flexible working arrangements. It is suited for a candidate who is hands-on, organised, and passionate about addressing real-world plant disease challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and manage field-based crop research experiments.
  • Analyse experimental results to generate new knowledge and improve disease management strategies.
  • Work across field, glasshouse, and laboratory settings.
  • Collaborate with a national network of researchers including pathologists, breeders, and agronomists.
  • Communicate research outcomes effectively to industry stakeholders and scientific audiences through presentations, workshops, and technical reports.

Specialist / Technical Expertise / Qualifications

  • Educational Qualification: A degree in Agricultural Science, Science, Natural Resource Management, or an equivalent science qualification is required.
  • Science Research Expertise: Ability to design, implement, and analyse field-based crop research experiments to generate new knowledge and develop disease management strategies.
  • Field Crops Disease Knowledge: Understanding of major diseases affecting field crops and application of control measures within dryland agricultural systems.
  • Plant Pathology Technical Expertise: Expertise in identifying plant pathogens and applying epidemiological principles to experimental design and disease management research.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to present research outcomes to industry stakeholders and scientific audiences.

Additional Information

  • This is a fixed-term position for a period of 12 months.
  • Work location is Horsham with hybrid working arrangements available.
