Scientist Position Overview
Axle is seeking a driven, organized, and detail-oriented Bioengineering Scientist to support the Virus Persistence and Dynamics Section (VPDS) within the Vaccine Research Center (VRC). This role supports cutting-edge research focused on viral evolution, sequencing technologies, and microfluidics-based analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop microfluidics-based methods to analyze intra-host virus diversity and evolution
- Design high-throughput, single-copy, full-length viral genome sequencing workflows
- Optimize virus inactivation and nucleic acid extraction from blood and body fluids
- Design and operate customized microfluidic devices for water-in-oil emulsion generation
- Develop methods for high-throughput sequencing of individual intact virions
- Maintain detailed experimental records using electronic laboratory systems
- Present findings at internal and external scientific meetings
- Collaborate with NIH and external research scientists
- Train NIH scientists on newly developed methods
- Contribute to original research manuscripts and peer-reviewed publications
Required Qualifications for Scientist Jobs
- Ph.D. in Bioengineering, or related field
- 2+ years of postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience
- Expertise in microfluidic device design and fabrication (PDMS, soft lithography, glass fabrication)
- Experience with Pacific Biosciences Revio SMRT sequencing platform
- Proficiency in RNA extraction, RT-PCR, library preparation, and sequencing QC
- Experience with laboratory automation and liquid handling systems
- Strong background in bioinformatics and evolutionary biology tools
- Working knowledge of human immunology, especially antiviral responses
- Track record of first-author, peer-reviewed publications in:
- Bioengineering
- Virus evolution
- RNA virus infections
