Department Overview

The Science Education and Public Engagement Office (SEPE), part of EMBL’s International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT), leads and coordinates EMBL’s science education and public engagement initiatives. SEPE develops programmes for European school teachers, young learners aged 10–19, and diverse public audiences. The office also provides training and support to EMBL scientists interested in public engagement.

Position Overview

EMBL is seeking an enthusiastic and well-organized Education and Outreach Officer to support and expand its science education and outreach initiatives. Based in Heidelberg, the role includes occasional travel within Europe. The position reports to the Education and Outreach Manager and involves close collaboration with SEPE team members and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and adapt educational resources and deliver workshops for young learners
  • Develop and tailor outreach materials for diverse audiences and environments
  • Support the organization, logistics, and delivery of science education and outreach activities, including events in the Heidelberg region and during the TRaversing ECosystems expedition
  • Contribute to increasing the visibility of SEPE programmes through promotional campaigns, partnerships, and communication initiatives
  • Contribute to report writing and other publications
  • Liaise with internal and external partners, including teachers and researchers at various career stages
  • Organize meetings with stakeholders and collaborators
  • Maintain databases and prepare presentations and reports as required

Required Qualifications

  • University degree in Life Sciences or another relevant field
  • Demonstrated passion for science communication
  • 1–3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience working with schools and teachers and developing educational resources
  • Experience delivering outreach activities to diverse audiences
  • Strong relationship-building skills with educators, institutions, researchers, and stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Native or near-native German language proficiency

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience managing online and in-person events, including logistics and remote coordination
  • Experience creating promotional content, including social media materials
  • Experience working within a European, multicultural context
  • Fluency in additional European languages
