About the Microbiologist Role
Manpower is seeking a Junior Microbiologist to join a global FMCG client known for brands such as Magnum, Carte d’Or, Cornetto, and Wall’s. The role is based at the client’s Research & Development facility at Colworth Science Park in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire (MK44), which also serves as a global centre of excellence in safety and sustainability sciences. The site is accessible by car.
This is a full-time temporary maternity cover position for 12 months, requiring 37.50 hours per week from Monday to Friday. The compensation is competitive, offering up to £43,000 pro rata, depending on experience. The role includes a mix of remote and onsite working, subject to business requirements.
Team Overview
Product safety is a top priority for TMICC. The Global Scientific Affairs function, part of RD&I, integrates Food Safety, Regulatory Affairs, and Nutrition expertise to ensure products are safe by design and compliant with regulations. This function also supports innovation and business growth.
Within this, the Global RD&I Microbiology team consists of highly skilled scientists delivering microbiological solutions that support brand innovation. The team integrates microbiological and processing knowledge to develop safe and stable formulations and processes for successful product development.
Main Responsibilities
The Junior Microbiologist will:
- Support microbiological clearance testing of ice cream products prepared at the Colworth site.
- Prepare cultures of microorganisms for experiments and maintain the Culture Collection.
- Design and conduct microbiological laboratory experiments to provide reliable data for risk assessment and incident support.
- Ensure end-to-end quality in microbiology data, including experiment design, execution, basic statistical analysis, visualization, presentation, and reporting.
- Conduct scientific literature reviews to support safety, shelf-life stability, and security across R&D innovation and business operations.
- Contribute to maintaining a high-quality laboratory environment and efficient working practices through teamwork.
Candidate Profile (All About You)
The ideal candidate is expected to have:
- A minimum of a BSc in Microbiology, Applied Biology, or a closely related field.
- Ability to learn quickly, adapt to various tasks, and demonstrate problem-solving skills.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Data analysis and visualization skills (e.g., Excel, PowerBI).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for presenting to multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
- Practical experience with microbiological procedures, including aseptic techniques, preparation of laboratory reagents/culture media, and safe handling practices.
- Previous experience working in a microbiology laboratory.
- A collaborative mindset with a flexible, proactive attitude, along with the ability to work independently and adapt in an agile environment.
