Microbiologist Position Summary

The Microbiologist performs advanced microbiological testing on water systems, bulk pharmaceutical chemicals, and finished drug products. This role includes method validation, equipment qualification, regulatory compliance, documentation, and leadership responsibilities including training junior staff and supervising daily laboratory activities.

Essential Areas of Responsibility

  • Perform microbiological testing on water, bulk chemicals, and pharmaceutical products
  • Collect samples and prepare standard and sample solutions
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation
  • Create daily laboratory schedules and facilitate morning team meetings
  • Write laboratory investigation reports
  • Perform method suitability testing and method validation
  • Conduct equipment validation activities
  • Perform microbial limit testing
  • Manage change control activities for SOP revisions
  • Review annual and semi-annual microbiological trending reports
  • Assist group leader with performance metrics
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety rules, and regulatory requirements
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Education, Certification & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred in Microbiology)
  • Minimum 2 years of progressive experience in a Quality Control laboratory
  • Working knowledge of cGMP, DEA, and applicable pharmaceutical regulations
  • Experience with microbiology testing preferred
  • Experience with LabWare LIMS and/or Empower preferred

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of analytical chemistry principles, including: HPLC, GC, FTIR, UV-Vis and other analytical techniques
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and ERP systems (SAP or Oracle)
  • Experience with quality and manufacturing systems (LIMS, TrackWise, QDocs)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
  • High attention to detail with strong problem-solving abilities

Problem Solving & Decision Making

  • Analyze moderately complex problems using data and situational evaluation
  • Exercise judgment within defined practices and policies
  • Proactively recommend solutions and improvements
  • Select appropriate methods and techniques to resolve issues

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent: Sitting and standing for extended periods, Manual dexterity for typing, sample handling, and equipment use
  • Occasional: Walking, reaching, twisting, grasping, Lifting objects up to 25 lbs
  • Visual Requirements: Close visual acuity for data analysis, inspections, and laboratory work

Working Environment

  • Exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, or gases
  • Exposure to moving equipment and moderate noise levels
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
