About the GEM National Consortium

Overview
The National GEM Consortium Fellowship Program provides opportunities for underrepresented minority students to pursue:
- Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in the Natural Sciences
The program combines graduate financial support with paid summer internships at GEM Employer Member organizations.
Important: Universities such as ASU do not administer the GEM Fellowship. Applicants must apply separately to the GEM Consortium and to GEM Member Universities.
Fellowship Benefits
- Recipients receive:
- $16,000 stipend during the first academic year
- Living stipend provided by the GEM Member University
- Up to the 5th year of the Ph.D. program
- Equivalent to other funded doctoral students in the department
- At least one paid summer internship with a GEM Employer Member
- Full tuition and mandatory fees covered by a GEM University Member
Eligibility Criteria For PhD Fellowships
- Applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident at the time of application
- Apply to a minimum of three (3) GEM Member University STEM graduate programs
- Deadline: January 15 or the department deadline (whichever is earlier)
- Be admitted to a GEM Member University graduate program before receiving the fellowship
- GRE (Recommended): Taking the GRE is strongly encouraged to increase eligibility across GEM Member Universities
- Applicants may be asked to provide test dates and/or scores, if available
Application Process
- Apply directly through the GEM Consortium application portal
- Apply separately to at least three GEM Member Universities
- Monitor admission decisions from universities
- Fellowship awards are made only after university admission is confirmed
