About the Position

The Molecular Metabolism & Energy Homeostasis research group at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing investigates molecular mechanisms that control mitochondrial function, maintain energy homeostasis, and protect against age-related decline.

The group, headed by Dr. Hans-Georg Sprenger, is seeking a highly motivated and creative Postdoctoral Research Fellow with a PhD (completed or near completion) in biochemistry, molecular biology, cellular biology, or a related field. The ideal candidate will work independently and contribute critical thinking and problem-solving skills to an interdisciplinary research environment.

Your Tasks

  • Investigate the role of small molecules in regulating mitochondrial function and energy homeostasis

  • Design and perform molecular studies using mammalian cell culture and mouse models

  • Independently analyze data and develop innovative experimental approaches

  • Support the preparation of funding proposals, fellowship applications, and publications

  • Present research findings at internal seminars and international conferences

  • Stay up to date with relevant scientific literature

  • Supervise students and PhD candidates

Your Qualifications

  • Strong track record of scientific accomplishments

  • Hands-on experience in cell culture, mouse work, biochemical assays, and/or metabolomics is highly desirable

  • Ability to work well in a team with a creative and collaborative mindset

  • FELASA certification for work with laboratory animals is a strong asset

  • Expertise in muscle or fat biology, mitochondrial biology, and/or metabolomics is preferred

  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior lab members (e.g., master’s or undergraduate students) is highly valued
