Scientist Job Summary

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Band 5 HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Cellular Pathology team on a fixed-term contract for one year.

The successful candidate will contribute to the technical preparation and processing of specimens, performing a full range of routine histology and cytology laboratory procedures in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Core Laboratory Responsibilities

  • As an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist, you will:
  • Perform a full range of analytical and technical duties within Cellular Pathology
  • Participate in routine histology and cytology services, including:
    • Section cutting
    • Embedding
    • Staining and checking sections
    • Immunohistochemistry
    • Laboratory computer systems for sample processing
    • Filing slides and blocks
    • Collecting solvents when required
    • Non-gynaecological cytology and andrology technical work
    • Specimen dissection (as appropriate)
  • This list is not exhaustive. The post holder will be required to undertake all histology techniques and train in non-gynaecological cytology if not already experienced.

Operational & Quality Responsibilities

  • Follow departmental SOPs, risk assessments, and safety documentation
  • Assist in reviewing and updating SOPs, COSHH, and risk assessments
  • Work collaboratively to ensure optimal workflow and timely specimen processing
  • Participate in the departmental rota, including:
    • Early starts from 08:00
    • Late finishes up to 17:15 (service dependent)
  • Maintain professional competence and scientific skills
  • Use and perform daily maintenance of specialist laboratory equipment
  • Actively participate in departmental Quality Management Systems in line with UKAS ISO 15189
  • Record and report incidents, errors, or non-compliance
  • Support stock control, ordering, and annual stock checks

Training & IT Responsibilities

  • Deliver training in specialist technical procedures and laboratory equipment
  • Support and advise less experienced staff
  • Daily use of laboratory IT systems, including WinPath and Q-Pulse, to:
    • Enter and authorise diagnostic results
    • Track specimens
    • Respond to staff queries

Person Specification For Scientist Job

Essential Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Member of the Institute of Biomedical Science (MIBMS)
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology

Essential Experience

  • Experience working in a diagnostic histology laboratory
  • Competency in:
    • Embedding
    • Microtomy
    • Histological staining
    • Quality control checking of samples

Desirable Experience

  • Specimen dissection at cut-up
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Non-gynaecological cytology and andrology
  • Involvement in quality management systems
  • SOP review and incident reporting
  • Health & Safety processes, including risk assessments and COSHH

Professional & Regulatory Requirements for Scientist Job

  • Active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with evidence maintained
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check required
  • Compliance with UK professional registration standards
