The Technical Officer Job Role

The Technical Officer (TO-3) will specialize in diagnostic development within the Medical Devices Research Centre, specifically supporting the Cell Models and Antibody Technology team in the Digital Health and Molecular Technologies Directorate.

The role involves contributing technical expertise to the development, testing, and validation of diagnostic assays and systems, particularly in areas such as in vitro diagnostics and precision medicine.

Working closely with researchers, the individual will assist in the design, prototyping, and validation of lateral flow and biosensor diagnostic platforms, supporting both fundamental research and commercialization efforts.

The position involves collaboration within a multidisciplinary team contributing to biomedical innovation, translating scientific concepts into validated prototypes that advance Canada’s medical device ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute experiments for diagnostic assay development, including lateral flow, immunoassay, and biosensor platforms.
  • Support assay optimization, performance validation, and data collection to ensure reliability and reproducibility.
  • Conduct sample preparation, reagent formulation, and test assembly with accurate documentation.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment in compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Contribute to data analysis and preparation of technical reports.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners to advance diagnostic R&D initiatives.

Screening Criteria

Education

Post-secondary education in biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field. A university degree in these areas may be considered an asset.

Experience

  • Hands-on experience in lateral flow assays, immunoassays, and diagnostic test development and validation.
  • Experience across multiple assay platforms (protein, nucleic acid, cell-based).
  • Experience in diverse application areas such as infectious disease, oncology, and biomarkers.
  • Experience in synthetic biology, molecular biology, recombinant protein, and cell-based assay systems.
  • Experience with assay performance metrics including sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility, limit of detection (LoD), and limit of quantification (LoQ).

Conditions of Employment

Reliability Status clearance (background verification over a 5-year period).

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $66,126 – $91,012 per annum
