Microbiology Job Overview
The Production Laboratory Technician supports USP’s microbiology manufacturing operations within the microbiology business unit. The role focuses on the hands-on production of microbial Analytical Reference Materials (ARMs) and reference standards.
The incumbent is expected to anticipate and resolve operational challenges within their scope of responsibility, maintain detailed documentation, and communicate effectively with team members and quality personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Reference Material Production
- Perform microbial reference material production activities according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Conduct incubations, serial dilutions, and microbial enumeration
- Prepare production materials, including sterilizing components, preparing media, assembling packaging, and qualifying materials
- Ensure equipment is calibrated, maintained, and operated in accordance with SOPs and test methods
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of production spaces to meet quality standards
- Fulfill finished goods Analytical Reference Material products
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and detailed production documentation
- Adhere to regulatory requirements and Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
- Ensure comprehensive record keeping for production activities
- Update logs and properly categorize documentation
- Support QA/QC teams with production investigations as needed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Microbiology or a related field
- 1–3 years of relevant microbiology experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in microbiology or biological sciences
- Biological production or controlled-environment manufacturing experience
- Laboratory experience, including pipetting and aseptic techniques
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 17034, and ISO 17025 standards
- Knowledge of USP Compendia (Monographs and General Chapters)
- Understanding of FDA regulations, other compendia, and ICH guidelines

This is an individual contributor role with no supervisory responsibilities.
Compensation & Benefits of Microbiology Job
- Base Hourly Range: USD $29.54 – $36.87 per hour
- Target Annual Bonus: Varies based on role level
