FDA Identified Drugs Shortages – Drug Shortage Risk Due to Coronavirus

FDA says it’s monitoring the market for fraudulent treatment claims and potential drug shortages. The coronavirus outbreak, which has infected more than 80,000 people and has killed more than 2000 in China and worldwide, has caused a major impact on China and the countries that depend on China.

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak China, where a significant portion of the ingredients used to make prescription drugs is manufactured, the U.S. officials raised concerns this week about the security of the U.S. drug supply chain.

20 Drugs With Risk of Shortage

Producers of about 20 drugs were contacted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stating that due to the coronavirus outbreak in China, either source all of their main ingredients from or are finished in China to gauge if they will face shortages.

An FDA spokeswoman said that there were no reports from any company regarding the shortage of their drugs due to the outbreak.

Stephanie Caccomo, FDA spokeswoman said in a statement that, “To understand if firms face any drug shortage risks due to the outbreak, we have been in contact with those firms. So far, none of these firms have reported any shortage.”

None of these drugs or companies’ name was mentioned by Caccomo.

She added that the FDA has also reached out to more than 180 manufacturers to notify the regulator of any expected supply disruptions, reminding them of their requirement.

According to the FDA, the amount of active pharmaceutical ingredients used in drugs for the U.S. market in 2018, around 88 percent were manufactured in other countries. The FDA said that China produced around 14% of the API for U.S. drugs in that year.
