Background
Fusion Forest is an ambitious, interdisciplinary research initiative funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The project aims to develop innovative strategies to reduce the impact of fungal diseases in forest landscapes, with a strong focus on forest trees and their associated ecosystems.
Latest Biotechnology Job Summary
The Research Technician will provide essential technical support to the Fusion Forest project, working primarily within the Biosciences team. The post-holder will support laboratory- and field-based research activities under the direction of academic staff and Research Fellows.
Key responsibilities include routine and semi-routine laboratory work such as reagent preparation, nucleotide and metabolite extractions, sterile techniques, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. The role also requires accurate recording, organisation, and curation of experimental data.
The post-holder will contribute practical expertise to the optimisation and implementation of protocols for tree-based systems, supporting efficiency, reproducibility, and day-to-day project delivery. Close collaboration with Research Fellows, PhD students, academic staff, and students is central to the role.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research Data Collection

Support the planning and delivery of fieldwork to collect samples and data from forest trees.

Assist with laboratory workflows related to metabolomics and transcriptomics under senior guidance.
Data Organisation and Analysis Support

Organise, process, and quality-check research data.

Assist with preliminary data handling and interpretation through accurate record-keeping.
Research Outputs

Maintain well-organised datasets, sample inventories, and experimental records.

Assist with figures, method descriptions, supplementary materials, posters, and presentations.
Technique Development

Assist in refining and optimising laboratory and field protocols, particularly for tree-based systems.

Implement new methods following training and provide feedback on practicality and reproducibility.
Teaching and Student Support

Provide day-to-day practical support to undergraduate and MSc students.

Demonstrate techniques, promote safe working practices, and support integration into project workflows.
Problem Solving
