Job Title: Sr Associate Scientist

Location: United States – North Carolina – Morrisville

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree with 0-2 years of relevant experience in Biochemistry, Biology Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline along with an understanding of biotherapeutic production
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar capacity.
  • Knowledge and ability to independently design, plan, and execute purification/recovery activities.
  • Strong analytical and skills.
  • Prior experience in DNA manipulation, bacterial transformation, and general assorted plasmid DNA purification methods.
  • Direct experience with benchtop and pilot-scale fermenters, centrifuges, homogenizers, purification (DNA preferred), and tangential flow filtration.
  • Must have good practical skills in a laboratory setting such as: keeping an organized lab notebook and maintaining cleanliness to minimize contamination.
  • Must have ability of concentrate while doing repetitive tasks.
  • Must be able to read and thoroughly understand the weekly schedule for inoculation, centrifugation, and steps leading to the purification of plasmid DNA from Bacteria.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds for short periods of time (less than 1minute)
  • Understanding CL2 safety requirements, the practice of good sterile techniques.
  • Ability to develop and follow detailed SOPs, and to incorporate new techniques and technologies into bioprocessing strategies.
  • Demonstrated history of successful troubleshooting and experimental design.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assemble and communicate scientific data.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, multi-task, and remain flexible with changing needs
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work under strict timeline
  • Proficiency in Microsoft systems such as: Office suite, Outlook, Etc.

Nice-to-Have

  • Prior experience high-density bacterial cultures (fermentation).
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in preparative and analytical chromatography methods used to purify DNA.
  • Experience with a variety of basic microbiology techniques, such as enzymatic digest, determining DNA concentration and purity, endotoxin measurements etc.
  • Experience processing samples for sequencing and analyzing sequencing results.

Role Summary

The BioMedicine and Design group of Pfizer is committed to supporting the Rare Disease Research Unit in the development of new therapies to address unmet medical needs of those individuals with rare and neglected diseases and to make a real impact on patient lives.

Role Responsibilities

The role will involve working with the equipment necessary for small- to large-scale bacterial cultures and DNA purification. The individual must be able to conduct work with a quality mindset and have exceptional record-keeping abilities.

  • Executes moderately routine complex manufacturing assignments per written procedures.
  • Manufacturing of high amounts of plasmid DNA, using bioreactor fermentation chambers, alkaline lysis, purification by chromatography or CsCl gradients, concentration, and filtration; using aseptic techniques.
  • Ensure quality and purity of material generated by applying strict QC measures.
    Conduct experimental design in consultation with supervisor, literature review and increasing emphasis on independent design based on experience.
  • Carry out ongoing analysis of data generated and will identify problems.
  • Ensure manufacturing supplies and reagents are available for use when needed.
  • Must ensure detailed lab notebooks are part of daily activities.
  • Support internal and external collaboration, through direct interactions, data analysis, and work plan alignment.
  • Establish and follow existing SOP’s specific to the manufacturing job roles and activities to ensure consistency.
  • Assimilate new information, implement new techniques, and quickly adapt to changing project needs.
  • Understand and follow various Pfizer guidelines. The position will have interactions with multiple functional lines within the company including the Pharmacological Sciences. In addition, the unit is designed to operate in a highly networked manner.
