As the Manager for Research & Development (R&D) Regulatory & Scientific Affairs (RSA), you’ll be directly involved in the development and execution of the vision and strategic direction for the function. You will report directly to the Director of Global Nutrition and Claims Development and functionally to the Head of External Affairs for Nestlé Purina. You will be the primary focal point for R&D project teams and ensure that RSA is fully embedded into all stages of the R&D process. Your deep understanding of the regional regulatory frameworks will support the regional Nestlé Purina RSA teams regarding regulatory approvals.

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Nutrition, Food Science, or other food/nutrition-related areas, or a Law degree
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in Managing Regulatory and Scientific Affairs function in production animal or companion animal business
  • Experience setting strategic direction for RSA function, setting team priorities, and developing team members
  • Experience leading and providing guidance for a Regulatory Affairs function across various regions (North America, Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Latin America, Asia, etc.)
  • Expertise with AAFCO & FEDIAF guidelines
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with little supervision
  • Experience negotiating agreements with external consultants and managing external projects is preferred
  • Experience collaborating and influencing effectively at all levels in the company (including SVP, VP, Global Director, Manager, and Scientist levels) with little to no supervision is preferred
  • Ability to travel internationally approximately 20% of the time is preferred

Primary Responsibilties:

  • Leading the R&D RSA function for Nestle Purina and providing proactive RSA support for Research & Development, including ensuring compliance of new ingredients, product recipes, labeling, and communications
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to gain insights and anticipate gaps and opportunities in regulatory frameworks and provide Regulatory expertise, training, and counsel to research
  • Ensure the regulatory framework is considered at all stages of the R&D process. This includes assessments for new ingredients being incorporated into pet foods, treats and supplements
  • Identify potential regulatory risks with proposed alternative regulatory pathways. When necessary, elaborate and implement action plans to mitigate risks
  • Ensure project teams have a full understanding of how the RSA requirements will impact overall project timelines and resources (i.e., due to needing to register novel foods/ingredients, changes in production line/manufacturing equipment, final product compliance, and ensuring health claims are substantiated)
  • Be the focal point for external partnership relationships, and ensure the outcomes will meet the strategic objectives of the project
  • Have input into the structure of the protocol of the clinical trial (e.g. endpoints, test product, study population) so that the results from early-stage proof of concept and efficacy testing will support existing regulatory frameworks in target regions
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with the Regional RSA Managers, sharing results of assessments to ensure alignment, anticipate opportunities and risks, and to help streamline adoption by the regions
  • Make recommendations to continuously evolve the scope and capabilities of the function for maximum impact
